CONSTITUTION

BIG SKY ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHERN BAPTISTS

[as amended in 1995]

ARTICLE I –  NAME

The name of this body shall be: Big Sky Association of Southern Baptists.

 

ARTICLE II –  OBJECT

The object of this association shall be to promote the cause of Christ as represented by the Southern Baptist churches in the area of the Association.

 

ARTICLE III –  MEMBERSHIP

       Section 1: This Association shall consist of messengers elected by the churches recognized by and regularly cooperating with said Association and the Montana Southern Baptist Fellowship and the Southern Baptist Convention.  Any church, which has a mission looking to becoming a church, may have their mission pastor and one other member of the mission as an additional messenger from the sponsoring church.

 

      Section 2: New churches wishing to cooperate with and to have messengers seated in the Association shall observe the following:

            A. A formal request, attached to a full report of the church’s organizational activities, and missionary and benevolent efforts shall be filed with the Committee of Petitioner Letters not later than the first session of the semi-annual meeting (March) of the Association.

            B.   If, after full and thorough investigation on the part of the committee, shall vote on its reception, a three-fourths affirmative vote being necessary for admission during the annual meeting (September).

 

      Section 3: Each church shall be entitled to five messengers, and one additional messenger for every 25 members, provided that no church shall have more than ten messengers.

 

ARTICLE IV –  POWERS AND AUTHORITY

This Association shall never possess a single attribute of authority over any church, except that it may refuse to seat messengers from any church, which it deems unsound in doctrine or irregular in practice.

 

ARTICLE V – AMENDMENTS

This constitution and by-laws shall be amended by two-thirds vote of the Association provided that notice is given no later than the first session of the annual meeting (September).

 

 

 

BY-LAWS

SECTION I – OFFICERS

The officers of this Association shall be: Moderator, Vice-Moderator, Clerk, Treasurer, and various departmental officers of the Association taking office at the close of the meeting and serving until their successors assume the office.  The Moderator shall not serve more than two years in succession.

 

SECTION II – DUTIES OF OFFICERS

The duties of the officers shall be those usually pertaining to such offices in accordance with parliamentary law.

            The Moderator or next in line shall appoint committee chairmen sufficiently ahead of time to write the various reports to be made during the session.  He shall be chairman of the program committee.

            The Clerk shall keep accurate records of the associational meetings.

            The Treasurer shall receive and disburse all funds of the association according to the adopted budget or as instructed by the association and shall furnish a report to the churches of the association at each executive board meeting and at the semi-annual and annual meeting.

 

SECTION III – THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

The Executive Board shall be composed of the pastors of recognized cooperating churches and pastors of missions of such churches, and one member elected from each recognized cooperating church.  All general officers of the Association shall be ex-officio members.

            The Executive Board shall have charge and control, except when otherwise ordered by the Association, of all work of the Association and interim of its sessions.  In the absence of any regularly elected member of the Board, any other member of his church may be recognized and asked to serve.

            A quorum shall consist of 20 percent, but no less than five members.  The Board shall elect its own officers, and shall hold meetings at such time as it may determine.  The chairman may call special meetings.

 

SECTION IV – MEETINGS

The Association shall meet twice a year.  Semi-annual meeting (March) in Miles City and annually (September) at a time and place as determined at the previous annual meeting.

 

SECTION V – VISITORS

Visitors may be invited to attend associational meetings and allowed all the privileges of the session except vote.

 

SECTION VI – MAJORITY

All matters of decision by the Association shall be determined by a majority vote, except changing the constitution and by-laws (see Article V).
